Buffer vs Later vs Postiz vs OmniSocials: which social media scheduler works with your AI agent?

Which social media schedulers have an official MCP server your AI agent can use, what they cost, and how to run Postiz for free on your own server. Plus how a Grok Bot can draft your posts and wait for you to publish.

An AI agent drafting social media posts in a scheduler, waiting for approval
Short answer: Of 6 schedulers I checked, 5 have an official MCP server, so Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or Grok Bot can draft and schedule your posts in them. Later is the exception. The cheapest route is Postiz self-hosted (free, open source). For paid cloud, use Postiz Cloud from $29 a month, or OmniSocials at $10 a month billed annually with EU hosting. Whatever you pick, make the agent draft and let a human press publish.

What "connect your AI agent" actually means

An MCP server is a plug that lets an AI assistant use an app's tools. When a scheduler runs one, your agent can list your channels, write a post, save it as a draft or put it in the queue, all from a chat. No copy-paste between ChatGPT and a scheduler tab.

Drafts, not auto-posting. Buffer's own docs warn that its create_post tool can publish immediately and delete_post can't be undone, so they tell you to leave the approval prompts on (Buffer MCP docs). I go one step further: my agents only ever create drafts.

Buffer vs Later vs Postiz vs OmniSocials (and 2 more)

I picked the alternatives from OmniSocials' own comparison list that matter for AI agents, then checked MCP status and prices on each tool's official site on 1 Nov 2026. Prices are the lowest paid plan in USD.

Buffer: the best free plan, with MCP

Buffer runs an official MCP server at https://mcp.buffer.com/mcp. Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Perplexity and Grok connect with one-click OAuth, no API key needed (Buffer help). The agent can read your queue and drafts, create and edit posts, save ideas and pull analytics.

Later: great planner, but no agent access

Later has no official API or MCP server for scheduling. Its pricing page lists none, and later.com/mcp and later.com/api return 404. It's built for visual planning on Instagram, TikTok and Facebook, with Starter from $18.75 a month billed yearly and a 14-day trial. Use it if you post by hand. Skip it if you want an agent to do the drafting inside the scheduler.

Metricool and Publer

What OmniSocials' own comparison says (its claims, not mine): it counts 56 MCP tools in its server against 13 for Postiz, and pitches itself on flat per-seat pricing against per-channel billing like Buffer's. Postiz's docs confirm the 13 tools. OmniSocials is a competitor writing about rivals, so treat the rest as marketing (omnisocials.com/compare).

Postiz: run it free, or pay for Cloud

Postiz calls itself an "agentic social media scheduling tool". Its MCP server has 13 tools, including schedule, draft or publish posts, list your channels and generate images (Postiz MCP docs). It's the only one of the four that lists Reddit.

Option 1: self-host it for free

The postiz-app repo is open source under AGPL-3.0, with no gated features and no limits on channels, posts or team members. You pay only for your server.

  1. Get a server with Docker, such as a small VPS, your own box, Coolify or Railway.
  2. Clone the official compose repo: git clone https://github.com/gitroomhq/postiz-docker-compose
  3. Set your URLs and a unique JWT secret in the compose file or a postiz.env file (configuration docs).
  4. Run docker compose up and open http://localhost:4007. The stack includes Postgres, Redis and Temporal.
  5. Create your own developer app on each network (X, LinkedIn, Meta and so on) and add the keys.
  6. Point your agent at https://your-server/mcp with your Postiz API key as a Bearer token. Your reverse proxy has to support streaming HTTP.
The catch is app approval, not Docker. Postiz says getting your own apps approved by Meta, YouTube and TikTok can take weeks. Updates, backups and security patches are your job too.

Option 2: Postiz Cloud

Same product, hosted, with pre-approved apps for every channel. Plans are Standard $29 (5 channels), Team $39, Pro $49 and Ultimate $99 a month, or about 20% less billed yearly, with a 7-day free trial (Postiz Cloud). MCP, CLI and API are included on every plan. Postiz Cloud data sits in "Postiz-controlled regions", and EU hosting isn't stated.

OmniSocials: one flat price, EU hosting

OmniSocials is the simplest paid pick I found. One plan, $10 per seat a month billed annually ($12 monthly), everything included: 13 platforms, MCP server, REST API, CLI, approval workflows and a social inbox (pricing). The MCP server lets you pick which workspaces an agent may touch at sign-in.

Also new this week: PostHero went agentic on 29 Oct. It saves everything your AI makes as a draft until you approve it.

A social media Grok Bot that drafts, never posts

A scheduler gives the agent somewhere to put posts. The agent still has to write them. I run a social media Grok Bot that drafts X, Reddit and Facebook posts from my new articles — then I review every draft and publish myself. I'm not sharing the bot name or full configuration here; the useful part is the pattern.

Grok Bot is xAI's always-on agent with its own cloud computer. It's in beta for SuperGrok and Cursor paid plans, and it "only comes back when something needs your approval". Here's the setup shape:

  1. Create a Bot in the Grok Bot app and give it one job: draft social posts from your new blog posts. Never publish.
  2. Connect a scheduler. Grok Bot supports the same MCP servers, plugins and skills as Cursor (Grok Bot 101). Add the Postiz, OmniSocials or Buffer MCP server so drafts land in your scheduler.
  3. Teach it your voice once. Have it follow along while you write a post, then save the method as a skill.
  4. Add a routine, such as "every Tuesday at 9:00, draft posts for this week's article" (skills and routines docs).
  5. Write the approval rule into the routine. xAI's own guidance is to require approval for publishing, so the Bot drafts and you press send.
Using plain Grok instead? On grok.com you can add Buffer as a custom connector with the URL https://mcp.buffer.com/mcp (Grok connectors).

My recommendations

1. The agent: Grok Bot. Pair it with any MCP scheduler below. I run a social media Grok Bot for drafts only — you keep the publish click.

2a. Self-hosted: Postiz open source — or Postiz Cloud if you want hosted apps. Unlimited channels on self-host, Reddit included. Budget time for the social app approvals if you self-host.

2b. Cloud / EU: OmniSocials. $10 a month billed annually, 13 platforms, MCP included and EU-only hosting.

FAQ

Can an AI agent post to social media for me?

Yes. Buffer, Postiz, OmniSocials and several others run official MCP servers, so Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or Grok Bot can draft and schedule posts in them. Buffer warns that its create_post tool can publish immediately, so keep your client's approval prompts on. The safest setup is draft-only: the agent writes, you check it and press publish yourself.

Is Postiz really free?

The self-hosted version is. Postiz is open source under AGPL-3.0, and its GitHub README says it's free forever with no feature gates. You pay for your own server and create your own developer apps on each social network, which Postiz says can take weeks for Meta, YouTube and TikTok. Postiz Cloud starts at $29 a month with a 7-day free trial (checked 1 Nov 2026).

Buffer vs Later: which is better for AI agents?

Buffer, by a long way. Buffer has an official MCP server at mcp.buffer.com that works with Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and Grok, plus API access on its free plan. Later lists no API or MCP server on its site, so an agent can't schedule there for you. Later is still strong for Instagram and TikTok planning if you post by hand.

Which social media schedulers have an MCP server?

Of the six tools I checked on 1 Nov 2026, five have an official MCP server: Buffer, Metricool, Publer, Postiz and OmniSocials. Later is the exception. Buffer and Metricool include MCP on their free plans, and Publer only on Business.

What is the best MCP social media scheduler?

It depends on your budget and hosting preference. Postiz self-hosted is the best free option if you can run Docker. OmniSocials is the simplest paid cloud option: $10 a seat a month billed annually, 13 platforms, MCP included and EU-only hosting. For a free hosted plan with MCP, Buffer (3 channels) and Metricool (1 brand, 20 posts a month) both work. Prices checked 1 Nov 2026.

Which scheduler supports Reddit?

Of the tools I checked, only Postiz lists Reddit. OmniSocials says Reddit is coming soon, and Buffer and Later don't list it. Reddit communities have their own rules on self-promotion, so having an agent draft the post while you post it by hand is often the safer route.

Can Grok Bot schedule social media posts?

Grok Bot can connect to MCP servers, so it can use the Buffer, Postiz or OmniSocials MCP servers to draft and schedule posts. Postiz lists Grok Bot among the agents that work on every plan. xAI's own guidance is to require approval before a Bot publishes anything, so set it up to draft and wait for you.
